Meaning of school: What is school for?

what is school for?

:Meaning of school“: this speech was delivered by Dendup Chophel of class 12 Arts during morning assembly.  This speech contents a good message for both educator and the students. Usually students today tends to misunderstand the reason for coming to school and they end up learning for examination though the main purpose of learning is to make our life easier.

A child educated only in school is an uneducated child.

What is school for?

A man by the name Mark Twain once said, “I never at my schooling interface with my education”. It is said that a child educated only in school is an uneducated child. What does that mean? It means that true education is not merely learned through a textbook. And the way you prove that one understands something is not merely through a test. This is the old way. The chalk and talk way. The way of memorizing something, then taking a test and forgetting them about a week later. What good does that do? Truthfully, I forget and it’s not just me. Millions of students sings the same song.

How many of you guys avoided eye contact with the teacher to try not to get called upon? Afraid to raise your hand for fear of being wrong? Which proves that school isn’t a place for learning and building intellect. It is just a game you play for grades and how many class assessment (CA) you can collect. But I guess, what you expect when the most commonly asked question in class is, “is this going to be on the test?”

Students get more benefits from an extra hour of sleep, more freedom and less homework, than putting them to the torture of an extra essay, reading 150 pages and having 3 projects due by the end of the week. And that’s not just my opinion. This conclusion has been scientifically tested and proven.

You see, in school we are controlled by bells. We have to ask permission to relieve our bodily functions but not before the teacher asks a million question like, “why didn’t you go before class”- I’m sorry my bladder is kind of on its schedule and it’s not always timely. I’m just asking what school is for.

I’m not saying to drop out “because some schools are great and many teachers are rare treasures”. I’ m saying that there is a difference between people who are smart and people who score better.

So dear teachers, parents, adviser and students I ask one more time: meaning of school, What is school for?

Thank you.

Dendup Chophel.
