Brief history of blogging in Bhutan.
Blogging in Bhutan is not a new trend. It has been there since early 2000. However, they weren’t earning much. They couldn’t gain the subscriber and hence had few readers. We see so many bloggers fail or took so much time to earn.
If we look into the current statistics of bloggers in Bhutan, the numbers of bloggers are considerably less than in other countries. Bhutanese may have been ignorant of the fact that blogging can be a source of income (read article on how to make money blogging in Bhutan).
Bloggers fail in Bhutan not because they are not competent, but they lack exploring beyond what they know.
On August 30, 2015, around 25 bloggers attended the first community of Bhutanese bloggers conference held in Thimphu. They discussed various issues in blogging (Source: kuensel dated August 31, 2015). This should have strengthened the blogging trends in our country, but there wasn’t any significant increase in the number of bloggers.
These are nine reasons (personal experience) why the numbers of bloggers fail in Bhutan.
It may help you to be a better blogger if you know these points.
As per data from world population review, Bhutan’s population in 2019 is estimated at 765,708 ranked in 165th position in the world. Which makes 0.01% of the world population in 2019.
To have successful blogging, the readers are a must. Less population leads bloggers to receive less traffic to their blogs. Minimum the traffic (page visitor) lesser the revenue. Therefore, it’s hard to sustain without or less earning.
Actually, less population in the country should not matter if you are good in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If your page is ranked high in any search engine (Ex. Google), then you will get a good number of traffic to your site.
However, after blogging for a year, I have seen that ranking on Google also depends on the number of views we get. It is a lot easier to get traffic if the population in the locality is high.
Low Literacy rate
Bhutan’s literacy rate for people aged 15 and above is 57.03% (Source: www.microtrends.net).
This means only about 436,682 of 765,708 populations of Bhutan are literate. If we look at the literacy rate of other countries it is way high compared to ours. For example, Ukraine had 99.97%. This may be yet another reason as to why blogging is not trending in Bhutan.
Fewer people with IT background
Less Traffic to the blog is also due to less literacy rates in Bhutan. Additionally, all of these literate people may not have an IT background. This means they may not know how to access information online. This will further decrease the number of bloggers and readers from in-country.
Bloggers with a good IT background are seen doing well than the people who don’t have. Moreover, expenditure is less if bloggers are good at graphics designing and Search engine optimization.
High charge for internet connection
Access to the internet is a must for both bloggers and readers. Internet users in Bhutan are just 48.1% in the year 2018 (www.internetworldstats.com).
This means less than half a population uses the internet.
Less number of internet user keeps bloggers of Bhutan dry.
High data charges and fluctuation in net connectivity could be also the reason for experiencing fewer internet users. For example, B-mobile service users get a revised data quota of 959MB for Nu.99 for one month (www.bt.bt/data). Whereas Airtel users in India get revised data quota of 2GB for Rs. 99 for 28 days (www.indiatoday.in).
Bloggers hardly meet together
It was on August 30, 2015, at least 25 bloggers attended the first community of Bhutanese bloggers conference held in Thimphu. Hereafter, we hardly see bloggers of Bhutan officially meeting together to discuss blogging.
It’s very important for bloggers to meet occasionally. They can discuss solving the issues related to blogging, work on improvement, promote and help each other. Moreover, they can inspire and motivate people to blog.
Google AdSense earning is less in Bhutan
Bloggers earn a certain amount from displaying Google Ads on their blog.
It is an online advertising platform developed by Google. Here, advertisers pay to display brief advertisements, service offerings, product listening, video content, and more to web users (Source: Wikipedia).
They were paid from Google Ads if readers click and do some purchases. Unfortunately, page visitors from Bhutan hardly click on advertisements displayed (personal experience).
Earning from Google AdSense is very less if your page visitors are maximum from Bhutan.
Affiliate Marketing is not a sole income generator
Affiliate marketing is a process of earning a commission by promoting other peoples’ products.
Running affiliate program is one of the highest revenue generators for bloggers. They write product reviews and make a sale. So, they earn certain commission from the companies that offer affiliate marketing.
Unfortunately, online shopping companies of Bhutan don’t offer affiliate marketing programs. Moreover, joining the Amazon affiliate program does not bring good revenue, since we hardly get more traffic from other countries.
Maximum readers from Bhutan who get to see the product review hardly purchase. Since Amazon, the world-leading online shopping platform does not directly deliver the product to Bhutan.
Bloggers fail when they were not able to generate good amount of income. Feeling hopeless kills them.
Need for huge expenditure to start blogging
Money should not be the real factor for not blogging or failing to blog. It can be done in a free hosting platform such as WordPress, Blogspot, Wix, etc. We just need to have a good idea to write a blog. Quality content matters a lot.
A good laptop, DSLR camera, paid version themes and plugins to start blogging are secondary needs. You just have to focus on building good quality content.
You can always start with zero expenditure.
Take time to get a result (earning)
If you want blogging effort to be successful, you have to be patient, no matter how many sacrifices you have to make. If you are focusing on putting quality content, then you will see the result soon. It may take time before you make a proper earning, but you should not lose your patience in blogging. Blogging is not a quick money-making job, you need patience.
Maximum bloggers fail due to the loss of patients in seeing results.
The above-discussed point should not hold you back from blogging. The idea you share in your blog should be targeting all the online user, not just the people of Bhutan. It should benefit all the people who visit your blog.
If your blog is already receiving good organic traffic then you should blog consistently. None of the points discussed above applies to you.
